Castles of the Loire
Touraine derives its name from the Gallic tribe of the Thuroneses. In the centre of France, the region corresponds roughly to the present department of Indre-et-Loire and part of the departments of Loir-et-Cher and of Indre. Named the “Garden of France,” Touraine became the residence of royalty from the late Middle Ages through the Renaissance, and is thus famous for its many, splendid castles (Amboise, Azay-le-Rideau, Chaumont, Chenonceaux, Langeais, Loches, Villandry, Blois, Saint-Aignan….). Some of France’s most beautiful castles are nearby.
